The Step 2 guide, “Carry Out a Sustainability Audit,” provides a structured approach for schools to assess their environmental and social impact. This audit involves evaluating key areas such as waste management, energy consumption, and food practices through data collection and community engagement. By involving students, staff, and the wider school community, the audit fosters a collaborative environment aimed at identifying strengths and areas for improvement.

Step 3 of the GenB Eco-Schools programme focuses on developing an Action Plan based on the findings from the Sustainability Audit. This plan serves as the core of the Eco-Schools initiative, guiding the Eco Committee in setting priorities, implementing solutions, and creating SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals that engage the entire school community.

Step 6 of the GenB Eco-Schools programme, titled “Inform and Involve,” deals with the importance of engaging the broader school community in sustainability initiatives. Step 7 of the GenB Eco-Schools programme, titled “Produce an Eco Code,” focuses on creating a collective, student-led statement that encapsulates the school’s commitment to sustainability. This Eco Code serves as both a motivational tool and a public pledge, reflecting the shared values and actions of the school community. Developed by students, the Eco Code can take various forms and should be prominently displayed throughout the school to reinforce its message.
